The Oregon Lewis & Clark Inventory Project

Ted Kaye

Our Oregon effort kicked off with a planning meeting at Lewis & Clark College, June 16, 2007. There we reviewed the inventory form with definitions and examples and assigned about 40% of the assets to volunteers.

We're making steady progress on the inventory field work — what a great way to organize your outings along the trail! Please volunteer for this exciting project. Contact Ted Kaye for more details and to borrow a GPS unit (tedk2005@aol.com; 503-223-4660).

  • The Foundation is gathering information on Lewis & Clark “assets” in each state; this project will help NPS with overall trail planning [PDF]
  • There are 100+ Lewis & Clark “assets” in Oregon
  • They include: Sites, Signs, Art, Centers, Trails, and Other
  • Some states have already done an inventory (KS, IL, MO, NE, MT, etc.)
  • Oregon’s effort benefits from their experience
  • NPS is supporting this project with consistent data collection guidelines
  • Chapter members will visit Oregon assets and fill out inventory forms
  • Digital images are encouraged—each worth 1,000 words
  • A GPS unit is necessary: five will be available on loan from NPS
  • Extensive guidelines on form definitions and data entry are available [PDF]
  • Inventory forms will then be entered into PDF files [PDF]
  • PDF files AND hard-copies will be sent to Ted Kaye
  • Ted will “compile” all the forms
  • Each “asset” has a number: submit forms and images with correct file name format
  • Some “assets” are collections of items, list them on a supplemental page
  • We can add assets to the list; propose and Ted will control numbering
  • PDF forms and instructions will be downloadable from the website: www.or-lcthf.org
  • The goal is to have all forms in by the end of December 2008
  • The Foundation and NPS will be the final repository of the information
